Onam Date this Year
Onam is an annual harvest and Hindu cultural festival celebrated mostly by the people of Kerala and is traditionally associated with the legend of the benevolent Asura King Mahabali, who once ruled Kerala, returning each year to visit his people.
The story of Onam revolves around the benevolent Asura King Mahabali and his annual visit to his people, a visit granted by the god Vishnu in his Vamana (dwarf) avatar. Mahabali, known for his generosity and love for his subjects, was tricked by Vamana into giving away his kingdom, earth, and sky. As a reward for Mahabali's humility and to allow him to visit his people, Vishnu granted him permission to return to Kerala once a year, which is what Onam celebrates.
