The President of India appoints the Chief Justice of India (CJI) under Article 124 of the Constitution of India. The appointment process is based on the recommendation of the Collegium of judges and requires consultation with senior judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts. The seniormost judge of the Supreme Court is typically recommended for the position of Chief Justice.
