Requirements & Hiring Process

Here are what you’ll usually need, and how hiring works:

  • Age / Citizenship: Must be 18+ generally; some roles may accept 16+ with a high school diploma. U.S. citizen or permanent resident (or in some cases U.S. territory resident).

  • Background check / drug screening: Many positions require clean checks, medical assessments. Driving record check if applicable.

  • Exams or assessments: Some roles need you to take specific USPS tests or virtual assessments. Scoring well is important.

  • Physical ability: Many roles are physically demanding (lifting, walking, working in all weather, standing long hours).

  • Driver’s license: For delivery roles or vehicle operator positions. For larger vehicles, might need specialized license.

The application process typically goes like this:

  1. Search for a job on the official USPS site (jobs.usps.com or the legacy eCareer site depending on position).

  2. Fill in the application, upload required documents.

  3. If required, take exam/assessment.

  4. Screening: background check, medical/drug screening, motor vehicle record check.

  5. If cleared, confirm employment and start date.

Timeframe & Pay & Benefits

  • How long it takes: The hiring process may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the role, location, how busy USPS is, and whether background checks etc. are clear.

  • Pay & benefits: USPS jobs often include good benefits (health insurance, retirement plans, paid leave, etc.), especially for career positions. Pay depends on the role and location; delivery and driver roles tend to pay more than basic clerical or support roles.

Tips to Improve Chances

  • Be prepared for the exam or assessment—practice online if possible. Postal exam resources exist.

  • Apply early and monitor the job postings in your ZIP code or city. Openings fill quickly.

  • Make sure all required documentation (license, driving record, references) is updated.

  • If possible, tailor your application to highlight physical ability / customer service experience if applying for those types of roles.

  • Use the official USPS website to avoid scams. USPS will never charge you a fee to apply.
