Fruit flies can be super annoying, but the good news is they’re pretty easy to get rid of if you use the right tricks. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
They’re attracted to ripe/rotting fruits, vegetables, juice, alcohol, and sugary liquids.
They also breed in sink drains, garbage bins, mops, or damp places.
Throw away overripe fruits/veggies.
Keep kitchen counters, sink, and drains clean.
Take out garbage daily (especially food waste).
Here are a few easy homemade traps:
Apple Cider Vinegar Trap
Pour apple cider vinegar in a small bowl.
Add a drop of dish soap (breaks the surface tension).
Flies get attracted, land, and sink.
Fruit Trap
Put a piece of overripe fruit in a jar.
Cover with plastic wrap and poke tiny holes.
Flies go in but can’t get out.
Wine or Beer Trap
Leave a little wine/beer in a bottle.
Narrow neck traps them inside.
Pour boiling water down sink drains daily.
Or mix 1 cup vinegar + ½ cup baking soda, let it foam, then rinse with hot water.
Store fruits/veggies in the fridge or sealed containers.
Wash groceries when you bring them home.
Wipe spills (especially sugary ones) immediately.
Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight.
If you want them gone fast, set multiple traps in different spots (near fruit bowl, sink, trash can) while also cleaning up sources. Within a few days, you’ll notice a big drop.
