Onam is celebrated for 10 days to commemorate the mythical annual return of the benevolent king Mahabali to his kingdom, a visit granted by Lord Vishnu. The 10-day celebration also coincides with the harvest season, symbolizing the bounty of the harvest and the end of the monsoon. Each of the 10 days has its own unique significance, customs, and rituals, from preparing the floral floor decorations (pookalams) to enjoying grand feasts (sadyas) and participating in traditional events.
